SCAR THERAPY

The techniques used in Scar Therapy are VERY different to that of Sports or Deep Tissue Massage.  It may be delivered without the use of oils or creams, the touch is much lighter, featherlike, more gentile. This pain-free treatment encourages the scar tissue to integrate with healthy surrounding tissue; it encourages fluid exchange and hydration to the scar site; it aids in dispensing lumps and filling in dips; it changes the composition of adhesions and encourages movement in areas affected by stress via the fascial network brought on by tight scars.

Incorporated into the treatments, the therapist may use IASTM, cupping and taping technique, with advanced treatments the DOT and/or LymphaTouch devices may be recommended.

Patients have reported differences in the condition of the scar (it may feel softer); that they have less localised pain; restrictions have lessened; mobility continues to improve, and they are happier with the general appearance of the scar too.

MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAInage

Trained in FLUROSCOPY GUIDED MEDICAL LYMPH DRAINAGE (FG-MLD) – the Fill & Flush method – this is a gentle massage technique comprising of a series of rhythmic, light strokes in a specific sequence along lymphatic pathways specific to the client in order to help to reduce swelling and aid in returning lymph to the circulatory system.  This treatment can be effective in controlling lymphoedema and assists in conditions arising from venous insufficiency.  The conditions may arise from surgery (including interference or removal or lymph nodes), trauma (direct impact on the initial lymphatics) or it may be a genetic condition.

In addition to hands on therapy, devices such as the LymphaTouch, as shown, may be used to activate the uptake of fluid.

In between treatments clients are encouraged to manage their lymphoedema with the aid of special balls and exercises given during the treatment.

Courses of MLD treatments vary depending on the area and severity of swelling.  Following this you may require some maintenance sessions, this will be assessed towards the end of your course of treatment.

deep oscillation therapy

Deep Oscillation Therapy (DOT) can be used in conjunction with Scar Therapy and MLD or on its own.  It creates an electrostatic pulse (feeling like a vibration) directly onto connective tissue, lifting and dropping it at various rates.  It penetrates as deep as 8-10cm below the surface of the skin, helping to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, help manage lymphoedema/lipoedema and reduce fibrosis in scar tissue.  It is applied via the therapist’s gloved hands once a circuit with the client has been formed.  DOT does not require any pressure on the therapist part so the client should feel a gentle, pleasant massage.

It is ideal for preparation prior to having a scheduled surgical procedure in addition to soon after and beyond.
